HARDCORE BALKAN COLLECTIVE - PROSTOR CEZAM ČAKOVEC

How does a camera survive a hardcore event?

A hardcore show brings chaos and adrenaline. Balkan Hardcore Collective teamed up with the CeZam venue in Čakovec to bring together four bands. Two from Croatia (Brutala and Youth Against), and two from Hungary (GEAR and xESCALATEx), who came more as guests to support the scene. Hardcore crowds have a particularly intense approach. Moshing involves punches, kicks and all kinds of roundhouse kicks, and those moves create a constant risk for the photographer and the gear.

Photographing an event like this requires being in the middle of the action. Sometimes you have to go into the mosh to get a worthwhile photo. More adrenaline means a better shot. The shot then carries the energy of the event and conveys the real feeling of the space.

The photos are edited to match Balkan Hardcore Collective's visual style. The emphasis is on contrast, rough texture and documenting the moment without filters. Adrenaline-fuelled photography carries more weight because it demands quick reactions and finding your way in a more dangerous space. Photographer and camera survive the show only with a clear read of the situation and constant movement. The point is to capture the energy without losing your safety or your gear.

In situations like this a longer lens or a zoom helps. It gives you a safer distance and a steadier shot. I use a 28–75mm range and it has proved enough. During the mosh parts you have to watch the crowd and wait for a moment when things calm down a bit. That's when you get a cleaner shot without exposing your gear to unnecessary risk.
