Concert photography: capturing stage energy in motion

Concert photography is a genre with no second chances. The light changes from second to second, the musicians don't stop on your cue, and the crowd is as much a part of the story as the band on stage. Through 2024 I shot several gigs and club concerts, from small shows to rap sets under red stage light, and each time I learned something new about working in unpredictable conditions.

Working in darkness, smoke and movement

The biggest technical challenge is always light, or more precisely the lack of it. Stage lighting can be too strong on one side and almost non-existent on the other, so you constantly have to adjust exposure from shot to shot. On top of that, musicians move fast and unpredictably, so hunting for a sharp shot comes down to reflexes and reading the moment: knowing when the guitarist will jump or when the singer will throw their head back. Fast lenses with wide apertures are practically a must.

The crowd is as much the story as the band

Many photographers focus only on the performers, but for me the crowd's emotion is just as important a part of the story. Raised hands, dancing in the dark, people singing the lyrics with the band: all of that builds an atmosphere the stage alone can't tell. When I shoot, I deliberately mix shots of the performers with shots of the crowd to capture the whole concert experience, not just what happens on stage, but also what happens in front of it.
